Job Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Data Science Team based at our Bristol office, as a Senior Data Scientist, to work with business stakeholders to identify and understand use cases for the application of analytical and Data Science techniques that provide commercial and customer value.

As a key member of the team, the Senior Data Scientist will be responsible for driving insights and efficiencies across the organisation through the application of advanced machine learning techniques and data analysis.

This role will play a critical role in helping National Grid make informed, data-driven decisions that drive growth and optimise performance.

As part of our hybrid working approach, this role offers a mix of office and home working.

If you are offered a position, you will be required to successfully complete a basic DBS check that shows any unspent convictions or conditional cautions.

*Please note you may initially be appointed at a lower salary until all relevant courses and training are complete.

Main Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement machine learning models and algorithms to uncover trends, patterns, and insights in large and complex data sets.
  • Work with cross-functional teams to identify high-impact business challenges and develop data-driven solutions.
  • Conduct data analysis, interpret results, and make recommendations for action based on insights derived from the data.
  • Design and develop predictive models using statistical and machine learning techniques to drive operational efficiencies and improve business performance.
  • Collaborate with business stakeholders to identify opportunities for data-driven decision making and support them in developing and executing data-driven strategies.
  • Mentor and train data scientists, providing guidance on data analysis, machine learning techniques, and best practices for data science projects.
  • Stay current on industry trends and emerging technologies, and evaluate their potential impact on National Grid's data science and analytics initiatives.
  • Lead on NGED utilisation of Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence
  • Communicate effectively across all NGED business areas and externally, ensuring all required areas are engaged to support and deliver timely and effective output and business insight and intelligence.
  • Understand data governance and ensure solutions are developed and delivered in line with emerging Data Governance processes;
  • Recognise and exploit business opportunities to ensure more efficient and effective performance of the organisation;

The Ideal Candidate

  • A degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Mathematics, or a related field.
  • Strong experience with machine learning techniques and predictive modelling, including experience with Python and/or R programming languages.
  • Strong data visualisation and storytelling skills using tools such as Tableau, PowerBI, or similar.
  • Experience working with large and complex data sets and a deep understanding of data science methodologies and best practices.
  • Strong collaboration and communication skills with the ability to effectively present findings and insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Proven experience in a data science leadership role with the ability to mentor and train data scientists.
