Job Introduction

An opportunity has become available for a Telecoms Design Manager reporting to the general manager of National Grid Telecoms with a base to be agreed within NGEDs geographical operational area.

The Telecoms Design Manager will be responsible for the specification and design of the National Grid Telecoms Network, including fibre, network equipment and SCADA systems, including policy documentation and development in a fast and evolving product space. The successful applicant will lead a team to ensure our network remains a high quality, cost effective and reliable service whilst seeking future solutions, therefore experience in Telecom infrastructure and service delivery would be highly beneficial.

As part of our hybrid working approach and in line with our policy, this role allows you to apply for a mix of office and home working. Hybrid working can only be considered once your initial training is complete and subject to business need.

*You may initially be appointed on a lower salary until the successful completion of all relevant training.

Main Responsibilities

You’ll be results driven, responsible for developing individuals within the team, whilst maintaining excellent standards of service to ensure the Communications and SCADA networks that support the Control and Visibility of the high-voltage electricity network meet the requirements of our parent company National Grid. You will:

  • Be responsible for the overall performance and development of the National Grid Telecoms network, systems and products.
  • Developing, proposing and setting direction to achieve set results observing new and technology opportunities.
  • Managing your own working time to ensure that objectives and projects are completed in the most efficient manner.
  • Maintain professional relationships with colleagues, customers, suppliers and other external organisations.
  • Work safely and in accordance with approved procedures and techniques.
  • Set personal and team objectives, monitoring performance.
  • Act in the capacity as a company expert in regard to telecommunications to contribute towards the overall strategic development of the business and its customers.

The Ideal Candidate

You will be expected to have a detailed knowledge and understanding on a wide range of Telecoms solutions, including both mobile and fixed network assets. The role will involve travel across all National Grid Distribution regions, managing your own diary with occasional travel outside of the area including occasional overnight stays.

You should be an experienced leader in managing an inclusive high performing team, committed to providing efficient and effective customer service with excellent communication skills.

Ideally qualified to Degree level or equivalent with extensive experience in Telecommunications or Electrical Engineering, however applications are also encouraged from colleagues that consider themselves suitable to make a success of this opportunity. We’ll need to see evidence of your qualifications. The successful applicant may be required to undertake standby duties in accordance with an agreed rota.

As the post you are applying for attracts a National Security Vetting clearance there are further eligibility requirements, information can be found on the gov.uk website. To meet national security vetting requirements you will normally need to have been resident in the UK for at least 5 years for Security Clearance (SC) prior to the date of application. There are exceptions to this however and examples of these include:

  • you have been serving overseas with HM Forces or in some other official capacity as a representative of HM Government
  • you were studying abroad
  • you were living overseas with parents
